The small village of Quinchamalí is famous for its black pottery with etched white motifs.  "Potters" are typically women who have been passing their skills to their daughters down the generations.
Each item of Quinchamalí pottery requires 18 painstaking steps, starting with finding the right kind of clay in the hills surrounding the village. These veins of clay are hidden under the soil and it requires an expert eye to identify where they are buried.  No machinery whatsoever is used in the manufacture of Quinchamalí pottery; every piece is molded, shaped, smoothed, polished, baked, etched and painted by hand using old fashioned tools made of wood, stone and metal.
